Juan José Gutiérrez, Corporate Director of Technology Services, Cecabank
Nuño Rodrigo, Deputy Director, Cinco Días
Dear friends,
The year 2022 has been a year of consolidation and growth in all forms of immediate digital payments, especially with regard to the Bizum service. The instant payment platform via mobile phone has become a standard in the Spanish market for person-to-person payments, growing exponentially and across all age groups. In addition, this payment mechanism is gradually being extended to include payments in online shops. However, despite the strong growth in the use of Bizum in recent years, it is still far behind the use of credit cards or other forms of electronic payments.
With this in mind, at Cecabank, in our role as a wholesale processing bank and as a one-stop shop for payments for the financial sector, over the past year we have processed more than 1,000 million card transactions issued by financial institutions and 123 million Bizum transactions. In addition, we have entered into strategic agreements with top-tier partners such as Visa, Cardtronics or Diebold-Nixdorf, and have strengthened our customer base and services portfolio. These figures reflect the growth of the bank as a result of its high level of specialisation and the ongoing adoption of innovation and digitalisation processes.
The transformation that financial institutions are undergoing towards a more open and competitive model, the influx of financial services offered by new technology-driven players, and the evolution of customer needs in a more mobile environment, mean that banks must continually rethink their digital strategy and respond quickly to change. Compounding these challenges are larger projects, such as the creation of the digital euro, an electronic means of payment that could be used by anyone in the euro area, just like cash today, to meet the growing demand for secure and reliable electronic payments.
The payments' ecosystem is immersed in a moving landscape; the coming years will see a battle of systems and solutions that will define the customer's preferred payment method. What will the future of payments look like? How is the digital transformation progressing? What trends will shape the payments' ecosystem? What challenges will we face as banks? We will be able to analyse all the answers concerning the payments' ecosystem together at the Cecabank Payments Conference "A vision for the future". To ensure the success of this new initiative, I would be delighted if you could make time in your schedules to attend this event, which will be held on Friday, 10 February 2023, in the Cecabank assembly hall, located at Calle Caballero de Gracia nº 28 in Madrid.
We look forward to seeing you,
Juan José Gutiérrez

In recent years, Cecabank has established itself as a benchmark bank in the creation and promotion of collaborative platforms related to innovation in payments and investment services, as well as in big data and other areas of digital transformation. On 10 February, Cecabank will hold the Payments Conference "A vision for the future", an event that will bring together industry professionals to consider and discuss the ongoing operational, regulatory and technological changes in the financial sector that have a direct impact on the payments business.
The way in which citizens execute payments and monetary transactions has evolved enormously over the last decade, and more acutely since the outbreak of the pandemic. Mobile phones have accelerated this transformation and have become an essential payment instrument, either for the payment itself by tokenising our cards and accounts or for securing the payments we make. In addition, new instruments such as the digital euro are poised to play a significant role in retail payments. Faced with this reality, in this new event featuring excellent experts, we will focus on what the future of payments will look like in the coming years. In addition, there will be blocks dedicated to the European Central Bank's vision of the digital euro; and geopolitical risks and their influence on the payments' ecosystem.
The conference will be opened by Juan José Gutiérrez, Corporate Director of Technology Services at Cecabank, and will be closed by José María Méndez, CEO of Cecabank. In addition, representatives from the ECB, Mastercard, VISA, Discover Financial Services, Iberpay, STMP, EURO 6000, Bizum and other Cecabank experts will attend the conference.
Cecabank is a one-stop payment shop with a commitment to service with over 30 years of experience, offering access to any card scheme, to Swift and to national and international clearing houses. The bank stands out as a specialist provider of flexible and innovative solutions for retail payment processing, ATMs and mobile payment solutions.
In addition, its service offering ranges from comprehensive solutions for the management of payments, exchanges and bill discounting to foreign exchange solutions for international payments, through the Global FX Payments service, as well as dynamic currency conversion solutions for retailers and ATMs, using the latest technology in artificial intelligence. The availability of Swift's Service Bureau solution and Cecabank's network of correspondents enables customers' payments to be sent anywhere in the world. And because it is a bank, Cecabank guarantees the highest standards of security and regulatory compliance.
During this past decade, Cecabank has entered into strategic agreements with top-tier partners such as Visa, Cardtronics or Diebold-Nixdorf, and has strengthened its customer base and services portfolio in anticipation of new market requirements. In means of payment, the number of annual card transactions processed has doubled in ten years, from 500 million in 2012 to more than 1,000 million in 2022.
In addition, Cecabank has continued to address changes to its platform to guarantee the best availability and high performance of its services to accommodate the increased volume in immediate digital payments, processing 123 million Bizum transactions over the past year.
