Cecabank joins the Emergency Committee as an entity collaborating in humanitarian emergencies

24 January 2018
  • Cecabank and six expert humanitarian aid NGOs join forces to offer a rapid and united response in humanitarian crises
  • Cecabank will raise awareness among its staff in major emergencies and invite them to make donations

"In the event of humanitarian emergencies such as the Haiti earthquake or the Typhoon in the Philippines, our employees and Cecabank, as a corporation, are always ready to help. Providing assistance through the Emergency Committee, ensures that our donations reach NGOs with experience in humanitarian emergencies. These NGOs also have specialist teams that are able to provide a rapid response. This means they are able to cover a large part of the essential needs that arise in an emergency, such as shelter, food and childcare". Antonio Romero Mora, Corporate Manager of Associate Services, Audit and Resources, made these remarks when the agreement was signed.

By signing this agreement, Cecabank has joined a network of companies that are part of the Emergency Committee. These companies include Atresmedia, Atrevia, Carat, Mediaset, Orange and Prisa, among others. The aim is to offer broad coverage and public presence in appeals to raise funds in serious humanitarian crises.

This agreement shows that Cecabank is committed to making its employees aware of the need to help and co-operate in extreme situations. Examples of these types of situations are the Haiti earthquake and Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines, which killed 220,000 and 10,000 people, respectively. These are situations in which countries are devastated and thousands of lives are destroyed. In these situations, NGOs, companies and citizens want to respond.

Since the launch of its social action policy, Cecabank employees have donated more than Euros 34,500

In doing so, Cecabank and its staff of 500 employees have shown their awareness of this type of catastrophe. Since the start of 2015, Cecabank employees have donated more than €34,500 to help in emergencies. The money donated has gone to countries such as Nepal, Syria, Ecuador, Haiti and Mexico. The company has pledged donations of the same amount as its employees, through this initiative. and to make one-off contributions, such as for the refugee crisis in Bangladesh.

Since 2015, Cecabank and its employees have donated more than Euros 73,000 to humanitarian emergencies. For Sara Barbeira, Coordinator of the Emergency Committee, "In the face of these disasters, it is crucial to be able to count on the involvement of companies such as Cecabank, which always supports these causes and whose employees are engaged and compassionate. They understand the urgent need for help in situations where people have lost everything in less than 24 hours. They have lost loved ones and their homes and are extremely vulnerable. At these times, donations to finance actions carried out by the Emergency Committee NGOs are essential."

Action against Hunger, UNHCR, Spanish Committee, Doctors of the World, Oxfam lntermon, Plan International and World Vision are the six NGOs that make up the Emergency Committee. All have a long and proven experience in dealing with humanitarian emergencies. They formed this organisation a year ago to be a single point of contact to call for donations in large-scale humanitarian emergencies.
